What size generator runs a pressure washer?
Assess continuous output and starting compatibility using the exact washer and generator requirements.
There is no universal generator size for every pressure washer. Machines with similar running power can behave differently during starting. Begin with the washer maker's requirements for the exact model, then check the proposed generator documentation. If no generator recommendation is stated, ask before treating a numerical comparison as approval.
Collect the correct information
Photograph the washer rating plate and obtain its current manual. Record voltage, frequency, input power or current, and generator instructions. Distinguish electrical input from motor output. Ask for clarification if a listing disagrees with the manual or covers a different electrical version.
| Washer information | Generator information |
|---|---|
| Exact model and electrical version | Exact model and supply version |
| Voltage and frequency | Output voltage and frequency |
| Input watts or stated current | Continuous or rated output |
| Maker's generator recommendation | Peak output and stated duration |
| Starting and restart requirements | Motor-start capability and outlet limits |
| Supply-quality requirements | Regulation and compatibility guidance |
Keep watts, kilowatts and kVA labelled correctly. Kilowatts convert directly to watts. Converting apparent power into usable watts requires the relevant power-factor information. Do not silently treat a kVA rating as the same number of kilowatts, or assume an input-current figure establishes motor-start demand.
Compare continuous output first
A maximum generator figure may describe a brief condition. Continuous output is the starting point for sustained loads. Add the stated demands of equipment that will operate together, including a vacuum or lights if supplied from the same generator. Write down the operating sequence rather than simply listing everything carried.
This total still does not settle starting behaviour. A washer may restart repeatedly during use. Ask suppliers about that pattern, starting the largest motor while other loads run, and individual outlet restrictions. A large total rating does not override an outlet's limit or confirm supply quality for sensitive equipment.
Use documented headroom
Rules based on doubling a motor rating can appear reassuring while missing the actual requirement. Apply headroom when the washer maker specifies it for the relevant machine and conditions. If none is published, the rig matcher can compare running figures but cannot establish compatibility.
Send both suppliers the complete load list. Ask whether the exact pairing is suitable, what must be switched off during starting, and what protection is required. Keep the reply with the manuals. A general statement that a generator runs pressure washers does not establish suitability for your combination.
Assess the operating site
Plan an outdoor position before accepting generator-powered work. Consider building openings, neighbours, public access, permitted weather protection and cable routing. HSE identifies petrol equipment in enclosed spaces as a carbon monoxide hazard; read its guidance. Open van doors do not create an appropriate generator operating area.
Obtain competent advice on protection and earthing for the actual equipment arrangement. Do not copy another operator's wiring or treat an adaptor as a solution to compatibility problems. Follow the manual for shutdown, cooling, fuel handling and maintenance. Plan lifting and removal from storage as part of deployment.
Commission deliberately
After suppliers confirm compatibility, commission the arrangement under suitable conditions using their instructions. Check normal starts, restarts and the agreed combined-load sequence. Stop if protection trips or behaviour differs from expectations. Record operating restrictions for anyone using the rig.
Reassess after replacing a machine, adding another load or altering the supply. A pairing confirmed for one operating plan does not approve all future additions. Keep maintenance and inspection records so the generator remains ready for the next booking.
